PURE PREVENTION - Step #3 - Breast Cancer Prevention

3. Choose Safe Cosmetics www.pureprevention.org/act_safecosmetics.php
Some popular brands of cosmetics and personal care products contain chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects. Worse, most chemicals have never been evaluated for health and safety. By making smart choices, you can affect change. Use the Skin Deep database of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics www.cosmeticdatabase.com to find safer personal care products. Then, join the Campaign www.safecosmetics.org and help clean up the cosmetics industry.

PURE PREVENTION - Step #2 - Breast Cancer Prevention

2. Eat Smart www.pureprevention.org/act_eatsmart.php

Studies have found potential links between pesticides and breast cancer risk. Pesticides and other synthetic chemicals are found in our food. Read labels, ask your grocer to stock organic produce and hormone-free meats and dairy products, and look for organic food at your local farmers’ market. And when gardening or treating your lawn, look for natural alternatives to chemical weed and bug killers and take preventative measures such as mulching for weeds and using traps, barriers, fabric row covers, or plant-based repellants to get rid of pests.

The pesticides of greatest concern for breast cancer are used in the agricultural setting. To take a step further, visit the Pesticide Action Network website (www.panna.org) to clean up the environment beyond your home.

Fact: Did you know LUNA bars are made with 70% organic and 100% entirely natural ingredients?

PURE PREVENTION - Step #1 - Breast Cancer Prevention

Pure Prevention is a campaign from the Breast Cancer Fund and LUNA Bar to raise awareness about the environmental causes of breast cancer and empower us to live actively, healthy and well. Pure Prevention focuses on 5 Tips for easy, everyday actions to help reduce the risk of breast cancer: Create a Healthy Home; Eat Smart; Choose Safe Cosmetics; Get Outside; and Join the Campaign to spread the word about prevention. Join the Pure Prevention Campaign and share this information with colleagues, friends and family at www.pureprevention.org.

1. Create a Healthy Home www.pureprevention.org/act_healthyhome.php

Make your home a chemical-free sanctuary. Many household items, including paper products and cleaning supplies, contain cancer-causing chemicals. These products can be replaced with safer, non-toxic alternatives available at your local supermarkets and health food stores. Plus, by making smart purchases you let manufacturers and retailers know that you won’t stand for toxic products.

Some plastics leach chemicals into the substances they touch, so you should try to choose non-plastic alternatives when possible.
o Avoid microwaving your food in plastic containers or in plastic wrap. Choose ceramic or glass containers instead.
o Swap plastic water bottles for stainless steel or aluminum options.
o Choose non-toxic baby toys and shower curtains instead of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), plastic or vinyl.

THE ROLE OF THE ENVIRONMENT - Breast Cancer Prevention

Fewer than 10 percent of breast cancers occur in women with a genetic predisposition to the disease. Even when all traditional risk factors—including genetic predisposition, reproductive history, diet, exercise and alcohol—are aggregated, more than half of U.S. breast cancer cases remain unexplained. The Breast Cancer Fund (BCF) believes that environmental exposures to toxic chemicals and radiation are increasing breast cancer risk. We need to get people talking about breast cancer prevention and reducing these environmental exposures. Visit and direct your friends to www.breastcancerfund.org to learn more and get people talking!
